August 16th:

August's Full Moon is called The Barley Moon, The Corn Moon, and The Sturgeon Moon. This is a very busy time of year. crops are to be harvested and prepared for the colder seasons, and certain game animals are set to be hunted, and some larger fish are ready to spawn and be caught. In ancient times August was the month where people would harvest, and re-plant crops for a second harvest in October and all sorts of provisions began for the coming frost.

Lammas

August 1st:

Lammas / Lughnasadh / Lughnasa-

This ancient Pagan festival celebrates the first harvest. This is a time of preparation for the coming Winter months when the God’s power wanes and the Goddess’ power increases.

Lammas is the festival of the dying and rising God. It was originally celebrated in honor of the God; Lugh. Lughnasadh means ‘Commemoration of Lugh”. Lammas is celebrated at the first harvest and it is a festival strongly linked to stories of sacrifice and death. This simply means that the first bail of any crop was sacrificed and placed back into the soil to richen it after the first harvest had been collected to ensure new life would be fulfilled and nourished; part of the circle of life.

Another way to celebrate would be for the villagers to go out into the corn field and create a Corn God from the stalks and ears of corn. At the end of the celebration, the Corn God would be sacrificed / destroyed, representing the life and death of the harvest. Some of the remaining corn would be immediately ground into flour to go into food prepared for the feast of Lammas. The feast was a blessing of the land by the people. As representation of the Corn Kings sweet sacrifice for his people, corn flour would be molded into sweet cakes in the shape of the Gods. This ritual eventually lead to the gingerbread man.

Spirit

Spirit is difficult to describe, it is considered to be the fifth element, however it is rarely used in spell work. "Spirit" has several different meanings and it all depends on who you are talking to. Spirit has no common symbol to represent it either. I have chosen to use a butterfly because much like ones own spirit; it tranforms, is full of beauty and mystery, and both can soar towards the heavens.
