The legend of how the Zodiac began:

There are many legends, myths, and lore about where the Zodiac began, the one that I find the easiest to believe is the legend of Tiamat.

Tiamat was born to the Sea and was a monster dragon of primeval darkness, she ruled the Universe. Tiamat existed for centuries before the Sea and Sky became separated. She is the dragon of chaos.

The Sea and Sky eventually gave birth to the first Deities and they desired control of the Earth and all that encompasses it. Tiamat was furious and challenged her siblings; the Gods, for control and the power to rule.

Tiamat gained possession of the Tablets of Fate which are supposed to bestow upon their owner the power to control the Universe. She gave them to her husband for safe-keeping, while she went on to battle the Gods.

Tiamat conjured up twelve horrible creations from the slimy depths. These beasts were like nothing the Gods had ever seen before; serpents who oozed poison, scorpion-headed men, men with the body of wild beasts, monster-dogs, creations with tools and weapons for destruction and manipulation.

After seeing the heinous destruction that these beasts could bring to the world, the Gods were so terrified that they took refuge, hiding behind the stars. Finally, Mardok of Babylon came forth and offered to fight Tiamat and her beasts. The Gods bestowed all of their powers upon him and he set off to challenge Tiamat's army.

Mardok used his strength and cunning, along with his new powers. He summoned the winds of Heaven and placed all of his strengths into them. He sent the winds directly into Tiamat's jaws as she hissed. The winds were so fierce that they blew into the very bowels of her body and she was split open and blown apart. Marduk finished the job with one final blow to her head with his club, destroying her forever.

Tiamat's monstrous creations were useless and powerless without her evil genius. The "monsters" vanished into the Heavens and now hide amongst the stars. These twelve creations are believed to be some of the signs of the Zodiac we recognize today. Others are the Gods who have been cast into the heavens.
